How to Convert Watts to Kilowatts
Because a kilowatt is one thousand watts, converting the other way just means scaling down: Kilowatts = Watts ÷ 1,000. No voltage or current is involved.
- Read the wattage — a space heater rated at 1,500 W.
- Divide by 1,000 — 1,500 ÷ 1,000 = 1.5.

The First Step to Estimating Energy Cost
Your utility bills in kilowatt-hours, so turning an appliance's watt rating into kilowatts is the first step toward knowing what it costs to run:
- Convert first. A 1,500-watt heater is 1.5 kW; a 60-watt bulb is 0.06 kW.
- Then multiply by hours. Kilowatts times the hours of use gives kilowatt-hours (kWh), the unit on your bill.
- Finally apply your rate. Multiply the kWh by your price per kWh — the Energy Cost tab above does this for daily, monthly, and yearly totals.
