How to Read Your Electricity Bill (and Cut It)

Most electricity bills are designed to be paid, not understood. But once you know what the numbers mean, you can see exactly where your money goes — and the single lever that controls almost all of it. This guide breaks down every part of a typical residential bill, shows you how to work out your true cost per kilowatt-hour, and gives you concrete ways to bring the total down.
The one unit that matters: the kilowatt-hour (kWh)
Electricity is sold by the kilowatt-hour (kWh) — the energy a 1,000-watt appliance uses in one hour. A 100-watt bulb left on for 10 hours uses 1 kWh; a 1,500-watt space heater burns through 1 kWh in just 40 minutes. Your bill's total is essentially kWh used × your rate, plus fixed charges and taxes. Everything else is detail.
The parts of a typical bill
- Supply (or generation) charge — the electricity itself, priced per kWh.
- Delivery (or distribution) charge — the cost of moving it to your home, often also per kWh.
- Fixed / customer / service charge — a flat monthly fee you pay no matter how little you use.
- Taxes, fees, and riders — local surcharges layered on top.
In deregulated markets, supply and delivery come from two different companies; regulated utilities bundle them. Either way, add up every per-kWh line to know what a unit truly costs you.
Find your true price per kWh
The rate printed on your plan is rarely the whole story. To find what you actually pay, divide the bill's total by the kWh used:

What actually drives your bill
In most homes a handful of large loads dominate. Heating and cooling usually top the list, followed by the water heater, then anything else that makes heat — the dryer, the oven, and EV charging.

Notice the pattern: the biggest costs come from devices that either run for long hours or make heat. That is where the savings live.
Seven ways to cut the total
- Attack heating and cooling first. Each 1 °F of setback trims roughly 1–3% off that load; a smart thermostat pays for itself quickly.
- Turn the water heater down to 120 °F and insulate the tank and the first few feet of pipe.
- Shift heavy loads to off-peak hours — dryer, dishwasher, and EV charging — if you're on a time-of-use plan.
- Swap any remaining incandescent or halogen bulbs for LEDs — an 85%+ cut on that wattage.
- Kill standby draw with switched power strips on entertainment centers and idle electronics.
- Wash in cold and air-dry when you can — the dryer is one of the thirstiest appliances in the house.
- Shop your plan. In deregulated areas, switching the supply rate alone can save 10–30%.

Why is my electricity bill so high?
Almost always because of long-running or heat-producing loads — air conditioning, electric heat, the water heater, or EV charging — combined with a higher-than-expected real price per kWh once delivery and fixed charges are counted. Calculate your true rate first, then find your biggest load.
What uses the most electricity in a home?
Heating and cooling typically account for the largest share, followed by water heating and, in EV households, vehicle charging. Lighting and electronics are usually minor by comparison.
Is my "rate" the same as what I pay per kWh?
No. The advertised energy rate excludes delivery charges, fixed fees, and taxes. Divide your total bill by the kWh used to get the number that actually matters.
